The textile discount specialist relies on new logistics space and on Pierau Planung
Something big is going on in the industrial area of Bindlach. The clothing and household goods specialist plans to build a new distribution center and will thus create 150 jobs in addition to the already existing 600. Pierau Planung have been contracted as logistics specialists for this project. In the first stage the logistic planners from Hamburg assessed the existing site and developed different extension scenarios. Now it is time for stage two in which the project team will record and evaluate basic data and start the preliminary planning of different processing concepts.
The NKD Group is one of the largest companies in the clothing and household goods retail market in Germany and Austria. Their network consists of 1,600 branch stores in Germany, Austria, Poland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Switzerland. Up to 8 Million items or 2,800 tons of goods are processed every month. Centre for all activities is the large central distribution centre in Bindlach with its current area of 32,000 sqm.
This is the central hub NKD is planning to extend now. The building concept has already been finished. Currently, the project team is preparing and evaluating alternative concepts for the fulfillment process The implementation of a fully automated high-bay pallet warehouse has already been determined. The new warehouse will have a storage capacity of about 16,000 pallet locations and will be operated by at least 5 AS/RS machines.
NKD have only a small range of regular articles. The largest percentage of their product range is f goods with a short shelf life that are advertised and available in the stores for a period of time. This marketing strategy results in an inventory turnover of 10 per year. This is a logistics challenge that Pierau Planung have willingly taken on. The new fulfillment process has to meet the demands of a diversity of products and seasonal fluctuations. Therefore, all systems and processes will be planned for a capacity of 10,000 picks per hour.
The completion of the new distribution center in Bindlach is planned for the beginning of 2013. The investment amounts to 24 million Euros.
